What a magical evening it was this Solstice for the inaugural Matariki Taonga Awards held Friday 20th June at Naval Point Club, Lyttelton, complete with traditional hāngī for those in attendance thanks to Ngāti Wheke.

The Matariki Taonga Awards was a remarkable event held with the purpose of shining a spotlight on the outstanding contributions made by numerous individuals within our community. Many of these dedicated people work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without the recognition or fanfare they truly deserve. This fabulous event was generously sponsored and hosted by the Lyttelton Harbour Business Association, a key player in fostering community spirit and collaboration. Any proceeds generated from this event were directed towards Cholmondeley, an organization that provides essential support and services to children and their families in need.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement and camaraderie as incredible individuals were both nominated and present at this auspicious event. Among the nominees were Lyttelton Community House, The Lyttelton Information Centre, Govenors Bay Jetty Restoration, Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, as well as incredible individuals, and several dedicated members from Project Lyttelton, showcasing the diverse talents and efforts within our community.
PL crew who were nominated included: Jacqueline Newbound, Claire Coates, Sue-Ellen Sandilands, Felicite Jardine, The Garage Sale, Lyttelton Community Gardens and Children's Garden, Lyttelton Emergency Hub, Skye Broberg and Wendy Everingham. PL members received two awards for the night, one for Ururangi - contribution to the Arts, and one for Waita - Solidarity.
We all really couldn't be more grateful or humbled. It takes a villiage after all!

A mighty congratulations goes out to all who were recognized for their contributions, and a massive thank you to everyone who plays a role in making our bays a brilliant community to live in, regardless of whether they were nominated or not.
As we look ahead, there’s always next year to consider. We encourage everyone to think about who they believe deserves recognition for their hard work and dedication, and to ensure they nominate them for the 2026 awards. Together, we can continue to celebrate and uplift the remarkable individuals who enrich our community.
