Is your household ready for a natural disaster?
If you are anything like me, when you hear this question you think “ooooh yes, vaguely – got some tinned food and water, we will be OK”.
Maybe some extra tins and a few bottles of water might be enough – but maybe it won’t. It will depend on how big the disaster is when (and not if) it happens.
It is in the best interest of everyone in Lyttelton if each household is well prepared. We may have to manage without external support for three to seven days.
After a disaster, Lyttelton Emergency Hub will be operating here, and other Hubs around Whakaraupo. In order to help us all see what would be helpful to have on hand we have organized a disaster preparation expo.
This expo will showcase services/goods that are easily available (or can be bought at the expo) that will help you and your family during and after a disaster.
Free entry – encourage everyone you know to come and have a look, get ideas for what you could do at home, get your family involved in putting resources together, or buy resources on site. Talk to people in your street about collaborative planning, share resource etc.
Visit stalls and talk to folks from Automobile Association, St Johns, Fire and Emergency NZ, Civil Defence, Rain Tanks NZ and Mitre 10 Mega on how to most easily stay prepared for any emergency.
